Linda Woodward, Lifetime Achievement Award

Linda has dedicated 35 years to Maine Audubon where she served as Director of the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center and led countless environmental programs for all ages. Her remarkable career includes co-chairing the Southern Maine Children's Water Festival for over two decades, serving as an Envirothon Wildlife Judge for 25+ years, and teaching at the University of Southern Maine's Environmental Science and Policy department. Linda's distinguished work has earned her the EPA New England Region's Environmental Merit Award and recognition from Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, while her impact has been featured in two books, "Extraordinary Ordinary Women" and "Route One Maine." Her passion for environmental education stems directly from her childhood, where she was hiking with her father from age one and leading nature programs for her mother's second grade class while still in middle school.

Maya Faulstich, 2025 Student of the Year

A beacon of sustainability in her community, Maya co-leads the Environmental Action Club at Yarmouth High School where she implemented multiple initiatives including "Dishes on Demand," which allows sports teams and large events to borrow reusable dishes free of charge. She has also been involved with the process of writing and implementing climate action plans, as a student representative on Yarmouth's Climate Action Board and on Maine's Materials Management Task Force. She co-leads Yarmouth High School's Environmental Action Club and is an active member of Maine Youth for Climate Justice as a legislative team member and a high school cohort leader. Maya embodies her environmental values daily—biking to school even in snowstorms, using reusable containers, and advocating against fast fashion. She is an advocate for reuse, sustainability in education, and loves joining activism and art together through music. When she's not giving testimony for a bill she cares about, speaking at rallies and presentations, writing songs, or washing dishes, you'll probably find her on an outdoor adventure.

Isha Kasai, 2025 Eberhard Thiele Environmental Educator

Isha has uplifted environmental education for Somali Bantu youth in Lewiston through innovative, hands-on programming that fosters environmental stewardship and cultural connection. She oversees youth and family support programs that uplift our community through culturally grounded education, mental health resources, and strong community partnerships. Isha organizes events, workshops, and educational initiatives that help youth and families overcome barriers and access the tools they need to thrive.
“The SBCA provides vital transitional services, advocacy, and programming that empower families,” says Isha, “especially within the Somali Bantu community, to maintain their cultural identity and build stable, fulfilling lives in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Our organization addresses a wide range of needs, including housing, food security, childcare, healthcare access, and more. Major programs include Community Advocacy, Liberation Farms, and several youth-focused initiatives throughout the year.”
She designed and implemented initiatives like Oh YEA! 4-H Grows True Leaders and ECHO (Explore Careers! Honor the Outdoors), engaging teenagers in field trips to local farms and nature centers. Her Kashekee Summer Youth Program immerses children in hands-on activities like gardening. The programs Isha coordinates are free, with teen opportunities often paid, and include transportation, snacks, and necessary equipment. This ensures equitable access to outdoor experiences and builds a sense of place for newcomers and refugees in Lewiston, Maine.
“At the heart of all my work is a deep belief that when young people are nurtured, celebrated, and connected to their culture and community, they grow into resilient, visionary leaders,” says Isha.”I love what I do because it allows me to walk alongside youth as they discover new experiences, explore new ideas, and imagine new possibilities for themselves and their future. There is nothing more powerful than a young person coming alive with curiosity, confidence, and a sense of possibility.”

Enock Glidden, 2025 Environmental Partner of the Year

Founded in February 2025, Outdoor Access Solutions reflects Enock's lifelong passion for exploring and making the outdoors accessible to all. Through detailed trail assessments, he removes barriers that often prevent individuals with disabilities from participating in outdoor activities. Enock's collaborative approach involves working with organizations, schools, and municipalities to create accessible outdoor experiences. His work strengthens community bonds by fostering a shared appreciation for the outdoors, demonstrating how prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity enhances community resilience. Outdoor Access Solutions is a testament to the shared vision of co-founders, Enock Glidden and Alexandria Sukeforth, dedicated to creating inclusive outdoor experiences. Enock brings a lifelong passion for exploring the outdoors and pushing boundaries, stemming from his own experiences navigating nature. Alex provides the essential business expertise and leadership, making their vision a reality. Also an outdoor enthusiast, she complements Enock’s drive. Their chance meeting, fueled by a mutual love for adventure and a desire for accessibility, led them to create Outdoor Access Solutions – a company dedicated to building an accessible future, one adventure at a time.

Hearty Roots, 2025 Excellence in Environmental Education Program

Hearty Roots is a nonprofit youth development organization devoted to getting Maine kids outside, year-round in order to help them become good stewards of their wellness, their community, and the land. Their unique and immersive youth engagement program therapeutically supports kids to restore, rejuvenate, and reset as they develop a toolkit to manage trauma and navigate peer and familial relationships. Recognizing the challenges facing Lincoln County youth—including poverty, substance use disorder, and mental health concerns—former school counselor Haley Bezon created Hearty Roots to foster holistic wellness in outdoor settings. This youth development organization guides kids off the grid and off the screens through connection, adventure, and reflective experiences. Year-round opportunities include Taproot Therapeutic Adventures, vacation camps, Teen Weekend Campouts, and summer programming, including specialized weeks for neurodivergent youth. With support from the Peter Alfond Foundation, Hearty Roots secured 105 acres in Bremen for a permanent campus. The organization maintains a no-barriers policy, providing scholarships to anyone needing them.

Elm Street School, 2025 School of the Year

Jessica Harvey and Nichole Bryant have been instrumental in promoting outdoor learning at Elm Street School through their Get Everyone Outside (G.E.O.) committee. They've delivered professional development to staff, created outdoor learning bags for classrooms, established garden beds and an outdoor classroom, and implemented RSU 16's first-ever "Drop Everything and GEO Day." Their model of consistent outdoor engagement includes participation in Winter Kids activities and outdoor story walks, making Elm Street School a leader in outdoor education within their district.
The G.E.O. (Get Everyone Outside) Initiative was founded by a group of four RSU16 educators during a Teacher Institute Weekend at The Ecology School in Saco, Maine in January of 2023. Brought together by a common interest of outdoor learning, the original creators established the mission of the initiative: to support educators, wherever they are, in getting their students outside to learn. In the months following the creation of the group, the founders began more concentrated work at their respective elementary and middle schools in RSU16 after recognizing the needs at each school varied. Jessica Harvey, a 2nd grade teacher at Elm Street School and a founding member of The G.E.O. Initiative, began working with Jill Mathieu (RSU16 Curriculum Coordinator) and Nichole Bryant (Pre-K) to form a branch of The G.E.O. Initiative at ESS. Victoria Kelley (3rd grade), Sophia Stone (2nd grade), and Becky Albert (K) joined Harvey and Bryant as the official team who would lead the work moving forward at ESS. Since the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the group has helped host outdoor learning stations during school-wide events and celebrations, facilitated the school’s participation in Winter Kids, written more grants, and has started working on longer term goals that dream big about getting outside to learn while still holding the original mission: to support educators in getting their students outside for learning. While the group has been years in the making, they’re just getting started.
