How are we working on advancing climate justice and climate change education in Maine?

Maine Climate Education Hub Initiative

MEEA and Subject to Climate created Maine Climate Education Hub, an online website full of educational resources to support Maine educators in incorporating climate literacy into their curriculum. This website provides easy access to vetted PK-12 climate education/climate justice teaching resources that are interdisciplinary, place-based, and high quality.  The website will launch by the end of August to support Maine educators in the 2023-24 school year! An advisory committee made up of organizations and educators is ensuring the website increases educator skill and confidence in teaching climate education.

Climate Education Policy

MEEA works at both the state and federal level to advance climate change education policy.  At the state level, our staff work in leadership with the Nature Based Education Consortium on efforts such as the passing of Maine’s first climate education bill LD 1902 and local advocacy for climate education support.  We also collaborated with the Department of Education on the writing team for the new state Environmental Literacy Plan to ensure high quality climate change education was included in the plan.  MEEA also represents Maine on the Coalition for Climate Education Policy and our Director of Policy Amara Ifeji serves on the Maine Climate Council.

Maine Climate Education Summit

MEEA organized the first statewide Climate Education Summit! On the leading edge of aligning state climate education with upcoming national guidelines, MEEA, our Changemakers Network, JustME for JustUS, the Nature Based Education Consortium, and Maine Climate Action Now, identified the need for a convening event where organizations working on intersectional climate and climate justice education can learn about the work of one another, build a shared vision about climate education and literacy in Maine, and start to identify strategies that will support the advancement of critical climate and climate justice education statewide.

Professional Learning

MEEA offers workshops to advance educators’ skills in climate education at our annual conference and periodically throughout the rest of the year.  We work both with teachers and nonformal environmental educators.  We also offer workshops for school district administrators and educators to build a culture of outdoor learning at their schools as a critical approach to climate education. Please reach out to Anna Sommo @ anna@meeassocaition to learn more about the trainings we provide!  Please reach out about your upcoming climate change education workshop so that we can share it with the MEEA network!

Research and Evaluation and Partnership

The Teach ME Outside project offers a free online directory of Maine community organizations to support your efforts in climate change education. MEEA partners with the Maine Math and Science Alliance and the Nature Based Education Consortium to maintain this directory and  study trends and needs in climate education in Maine through our Census for Community-based Environmental Learning project.  To find out more about this data, visit www.teachmeoutside.org.

Maine Environmental Changemakers Residency Program

MEEA collaborates with The Nature Conservancy in Maine to co host two full time, two-year residents working on advancing climate resiliency and justice through community based action.  This program offers in-depth mentorship and support for early career individuals with marginalized identities to become leaders in Maine’s climate resilience and justice work.

Maine Environmental Changemakers Fellowship Program

MEEA hosts paid fellowships for Maine youth to build their leadership skills, support the development of our youth network, and complete a climate action project in their community! The fellowship lasts for six to eight months and we offer three fellowship each year.

Maine Youth for Climate Justice

Leaders from MEEA’s Environmental Changemakers Network collaborate with the  Maine Youth for Climate Justice Coalition to organize events that advance climate justice throughout the year, such as the Youth Day of Action at the statehouse in Augusta.
