For Students, Teachers, Administrators, School Leaders, and Community Partners!

Hosted by the Maine Department of Education

This fall, the Maine Green Schools Network is launching two new initiatives to support sustainability planning in schools, foster collaboration across districts, and promote student leadership on school sustainability efforts.

  1. Green Schools Regional Gatherings

The Regional Gatherings are local, in-person events featuring practical resources, collaborative workshops, and youth-led sessions designed to foster student leadership and help participants build and implement sustainability plans for their schools. Register now and join students, educators, and school leaders for a day of collaboration, resource-sharing, and action planning for a more sustainable school system in Maine.

View the event website to register and learn more! Registration is free and participants are encouraged to bring a cohort of up to ten students.

Gathering dates and locations:

October 28th at the Wells Conference Center in Orono from 8:30am-2:00pm

November 6th at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay from 8:30am-2:00pm

November 19th at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth from 8:30am-2:00pm

2.   Green Schools Peer Learning Workshops

The Peer Learning Workshops are an eight-part virtual series designed to help participants build long-term structures to advance sustainability in their school districts. Workshops will feature a short presentation with accessible tools, real case studies, and tailored support from facilitators, including time for participants to workshop their own sustainability initiatives. Sessions are designed to foster peer learning and build a supportive network of teachers, students, and administrators working to promote sustainability in their school buildings and practices.

Virtual workshops will take place on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:00pm-4:00pm, starting on October 13th. Please use this form to view the workshop topics and register

Meetings will be facilitated by Ruth Poland and Micah Depper, two Maine teachers with experience shepherding school and district-level sustainability initiatives. The topics are sequential, but all are welcome to attend any session they are available.

We hope you’ll join us for one or both of these opportunities to connect, learn, and take action with others working toward a more sustainable and resilient public education system in Maine.

Thank you so much for your continued support of green initiatives in Maine schools! If you have any questions about these programs or the Maine Green Schools Network, please email naomi.lopez@maine.gov.
